Brunello
Brunello is a strong full bodied complex dry red wine from the area around Montalcino in south Tuscany. Brunello wine is made from
100% Sangiovese Grosso (also called Brunello) and has a bright garnet color. Together with
Barolo and
Amarone, Brunello di Montalcino
is one of the best wines from Italy.
Brunello is a very good wine to age, Brunello wines from good vintages and wineries can be kept for many years. Some wineries claim that
their wines can age over 100 years, though there isn't much factual prove of this. A young Brunello is complex and heavy on the tannins,
when aged the tannins decrease and the wine becomes softer. Even though the production area is quite small, there still is quite some
diversity in the production process amongst the 200+ Brunello wineries active in the area. While this diversity makes it difficult to
describe the typical Brunello, it is safe to say that both old and young Brunello wines are a pure pleasure and unique experience to drink.
The flavors that can be sensed are those of cherries, plums, vanilla, wood, tobacco, herbs and caramel.
Brunello has the DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) status, the highest in Italy.
